✈️ Price Drop Policy Overview

United Airlines eliminated change fees on most Economy, Premium Economy, Business, and First Class fares originating in the US, Canada, Europe, Latin America, and other regions. If the price drops after booking, you can cancel your existing ticket (receiving an eCredit / Future Flight Credit) and rebook at the lower price, paying only the fare difference.

Basic Economy is the single exception: after the 24-hour window, Basic Economy tickets cannot be changed and cancellation results in full forfeiture of the ticket value. There is no eCredit and no refund.

For refundable tickets: cancel at any time and receive a cash refund to your original payment method via refunds.united.com.

Best scenario: Standard Economy or above on a US-originating route. Cancel, apply eCredit, rebook at lower price with zero fees.

⚡ The 24-Hour Rule

Under DOT regulations, United provides a full cash refund if you cancel within 24 hours of purchase, as long as the flight departs at least 7 days from the purchase date. This applies to all fare types (including Basic Economy) purchased directly through United.

If a lower price appears in your first 24 hours, cancel and rebook immediately for a full cash refund — no eCredits, no fees.

📱 TripReclaim checks your United flights every 15 minutes during the 24-hour window — 96 automated checks — to catch every price drop while the cash refund window is open.

📋 Step-by-Step: Claim Your Price Drop Refund

  1. Log in to united.com — My Trips and locate your booking by confirmation number.
  2. Screenshot the current lower fare on United.com before starting the cancellation process, in case you need to reference it.
  3. Click "Change Flight" to directly rebook at the lower fare. United’s change tool issues the fare difference as an eCredit without requiring a full cancel-rebook loop.
  4. Alternatively, click "Cancel Flight" to cancel and receive a Future Flight Credit (eCredit) for the ticket value. For refundable tickets, click "Request Refund".
  5. For cash refunds on refundable tickets, submit at refunds.united.com. Processing takes 7–10 business days.
  6. Search the same route at the new lower price and complete the booking. At checkout, select "Use eCredit/Certificate" and apply your Future Flight Credit.
  7. eCredits are non-transferable and must be used by the original passenger. They are valid for 12 months from the ticket issue date.
  8. Phone: 1-800-864-8331. Premier members have dedicated lines and shorter hold times.

💡 Insider Tips for United Price Drops

💳 Credit Card Price Protection as a Backup

If the airline won’t cover a price drop, your travel credit card may offer a secondary layer of protection.

Trip Cancellation / Interruption Insurance (offered by many premium travel cards) reimburses non-refundable costs when you cancel for a covered reason. Purchase Protection on select cards covers price drops on new purchases within 90 days.

Cards historically offering price protection include select Citi and Amex products. Always check your card’s current benefit guide — many issuers have reduced benefits in recent years.

⚠️ Credit card price protection has been discontinued by Chase, Citi, and others. Verify your specific card’s current terms before relying on this option.
