✈️ Price Drop Policy Overview

Alaska Airlines eliminated change fees on Main Cabin and above fares. If the price drops after booking a Main Cabin, First Class, or refundable ticket, cancel and rebook at the lower price. Non-refundable tickets receive an eCredit for the full ticket value; refundable tickets receive a cash refund.

Saver fares (Alaska’s Basic Economy equivalent) are the exception: after the 24-hour window, Saver tickets are completely non-changeable and non-refundable. Cancellation results in full forfeiture of the ticket value with no eCredit issued.

Best scenario: Main Cabin (non-Saver) fare. Zero change/cancel fee, full eCredit issued, rebook at lower price with no cost.
⚠️ Saver fare: if the price drops, you cannot recover any value unless within the 24-hour risk-free window. Alaska’s 24h window is your only protection on Saver fares.

⚡ The 24-Hour Rule

Under DOT regulations, Alaska Airlines provides a full cash refund to the original payment method if you cancel within 24 hours of booking, as long as the flight departs at least 24 hours away. This applies to tickets purchased directly from Alaska (alaskaair.com, app, or phone).

This is especially critical for Saver fares — it’s the only window in which a Saver ticket can be cancelled for a full cash refund. TripReclaim monitors during this window to catch any price drop before your 24-hour protection expires.

📱 TripReclaim checks every 15 minutes during the 24-hour window. If a cheaper fare appears on Alaska, you’ll get an alert with exact steps to cancel and rebook before the window closes.

📋 Step-by-Step: Claim a Price Drop Refund

  1. Log in to alaskaair.com — Manage Reservations and locate your booking.
  2. Verify the current lower fare on alaskaair.com for the same flight and cabin class. Screenshot it for your records.
  3. Click "Change or Cancel Flight". For Main Cabin or above, proceed to cancel the existing booking.
  4. Confirm cancellation. For non-refundable tickets: an eCredit is issued to your Mileage Plan account or the email on file. For refundable (Flex) fares: a cash refund processes to your original payment.
  5. Search for the same route at the new lower fare on alaskaair.com. At checkout, select "Use eCredit" and apply the credit from your Mileage Plan account.
  6. eCredits are non-transferable and must be used by the original ticketed passenger within 12 months of the original ticket issue date.
  7. For Mileage Plan award cancellations: non-elite members pay a $125 redeposit fee. MVP, MVP Gold, and MVP Gold 75K members have the fee waived.
  8. Phone: 1-800-252-7522. Alaska also offers 24/7 chat support via the Alaska Airlines app.

💡 Insider Tips for Alaska Price Drops

💳 Credit Card Price Protection as a Backup

If the airline refuses a price drop refund, your travel credit card may provide a secondary layer of protection. Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance reimburses non-refundable costs for covered cancellation reasons. Purchase Protection on select premium cards covers price drops within 90 days of purchase.

Always check your specific card’s current benefit guide — many issuers have reduced or eliminated price protection in recent years. Cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve, Amex Platinum, and Citi Prestige historically offered the strongest travel protections.

⚠️ Standalone credit card price protection (covering fare drops) has been discontinued by most major US issuers as of 2024. Trip interruption and cancellation insurance remain available on many premium travel cards.
